U. S. Department of Energy: Shorepower Truck Electrification Project
Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the U. S. Department of Energy is funding a project with Cascade Sierra Solutions (CSS) to install electrified truck parking at fifty truck stop locations along the nation’s busiest freight movement corridors. To accelerate the use of truck stop electrification, the project also includes over $10 million in idle reduction equipment rebates for devices on medium and heavy-duty diesel trucks that incorporate electric standby operation or run on battery power to eliminate engine idling during mandated rest periods.

Cascade Sierra Solutions has partnered with Shorepower Technologies (SPT) to administer the project for the U. S. Department of Energy. CSS will oversee the project and administer the rebate program for vehicle owners. SPT will develop the truck stop electrification infrastructure and operate the system.

The Shorepower Truck Electrification Project (STEP) will locate and install the fifty truck stop facilities over the next 18 months along interstate highways where early adopter fleets and independent owner-operators have indicated the highest utilization will occur. The SPT power pedestals provide simple connections using standard power cords for 120 VAC, 208VAC or 240 VAC. and standard coax connections for cable television. Most locations will provide wireless internet access at an additional charge. For more details about available locations and service offerings,
visit www.the-step-project.org

The STEP Rebate program will offer incentives up to 20% of the installed equipment price or a maximum amount by category for equipment that can hook up to the power grid or operate on battery power to eliminate engine idling. This includes:
Auxiliary Power Units or Generator Sets with electric standby options $2,000 max
Battery HVAC systems $1,600 max
Battery Evaporative Cooler systems $  700 max
Thermal Storage systems $  260 max
Truck Cold Plate systems $3,200 max
Trailer Transport Refrigeration Units with electric standby options $5,000 max
e-Hybrid Transport Refrigeration Units with electric standby options $5,000 max
